When we think of England we either think of the bustling town of London, or the picturesque rolling patchwork quilt countryside. We don’t really think of dramatic natural landscapes. However, England has one of the most stunningly beautiful cliffs in the world, the White Cliffs of Dover, and they are not to be missed. Come with Coconut Club Vacations as we take a closer look at these majestic cliffs.
The White Cliffs of Dover are stunning in their composition alone. They are made from chalk and have striking streaks of black flint. This natural feature has long been the first and last sight as you travel to Calais, France for thousands upon thousands. We might have the gift of air travel now, but this is the narrowest part of the English Channel and although a choppy way to reach France, it’s actually only an hour and half. Make sure you have your passport on you if you want to experience both countries in just a day.
The best way to experience a closer look of the White Cliffs of Dover is by hiking them. You will have unparalleled views of not only the cliffs but of the English Channel. This hike is not for the meek, and is rather rigorous so be forewarned. It’s about a four mile hike and takes about an hour and a half. The ground is uneven and temperamental so wear appropriate shoes and have walking stick to keep your balance. Once you get to the top of the cliffs, whatever you do, do not go to the very edge. Stay back a few feet and enjoy the view from there. The exposed chalk can be very slippery when wet, and also the very edge of the cliff can crumble at any time.
You can experience the White Cliffs of Dover as people have for centuries. They have been a major destination as an English countryside retreat, a beacon from France, and as a way to reach the continent. What they always have been though is one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations.
